Hastings Photo Archive - Inside White Rock Baths

I learned to swim here in the 1970's, and remember a few teachers such as Mrs Avery, Mr Lucy and Mr Rootes.

I can remember swimming my mile here 32 lengths, and going through the bronze, silver, gold and honours awards, with a few guys I remember such as Steve Sherwood, Stuart Burchell, Steve Pepper and a few other who have slipped my memory.

Good times

I have a similar postcard of this hotel (Lettered B on front), taken at a slighter different position, showing the same cars. You can see the full view of the 3 deck chairs to the left.

The sight of the Lewis Hyland Taylors shop brings back memories - some not entirely pleasant. It was here that the Grammar School uniforms had to be bought, and my mother was sometimes very distressed by the cost of them for myself, as my parents had separated and money was very short.

This was the site of my first paid job - as a deck chair attendant in 1954. It was also the cause of my only spanking from my mother, in about 1948, because a group of lads had come to climb the rocks here, and I fell in the pool at the bottom of them.

I started school here at Mnt. Pleasant Infants School in Sept. 1950 /1951.

I wa born in "Tin Town" Fellows Road, off of Parker Road, near to the old power station.

The houses were made of riveted steel panels, hence the name. I can only remember there being about 4 of them

then but it's possible others were demolished previously.

I used to walk from there to school on my own, at 5 years old , every day we (friends) used to walk /climb along the powerstation high concrete walls on the way to and fro school. Part of the wall is still there, as you enter Parker Road at the bottom end ,the. Wall is to the right, there is a ledge 3/4 of the way up that we walked along.

The school entrance was through a low metal gateway set in the brick wall in Mnt.Pleasant Road, it is still there.

Several years later I used to attend the carpentry and metalwork sessions of school work from Priory Road Boys School that I went to. My uncle ' char ' ( charley ) used to be caretaker at the infants School for many years, he lived along Manor Road for a long time.

Rare view of the two piers together. The photo looks as if it may be circa 1925-30 given the length of the women's dresses and coats.

Unidentified tall white building on the top right of the picture.

The seafront promenade has not been developed that is an additional indication that it is before Sidney Little's

development

My family always enjoyed a walk up to the gardens in the summer to look at the floral designs. Excellent craftsmanship of the horticulture department.

Sadly in these times of austerity, those bits of 'icing on the cake' .are less and less common and we are even getting to a situation of no cake at all!

Those were the days when a working family on a reasonable income might be able to afford to buy a house, even if they did let out a couple of rooms for a little added income.

The sign to the left of the door suggests that the owners might have run some business such as music & pianoforte teachers,or tutors

Great card. I have rarely seen a close up of St Leonard's Pier. Circa 1895-1905 I would suggest. The three black carriages makes it look like a funeral procession

In the centre of the picture is Mendham Hall which was a facility for Emmanuel Church which was in addition to the Emmanuel Road, church hall.and therefore the church had two facilities for meetings of community groups.

In the 1950s we attended Sunday School there. I seem to remember that it was also used for the Church Women's Guild

Some of these fine buildings were lodging houses in the 1890s and possibly later, at the time of this photo that looks as if it was around 1918. The women's dresses are some what shorter than pre-war.

My relatives ran one of these at No 11 and amongst the visitors at the time of the 1891 Census were a Pianoforte Manufacturer, wife and 6 children. There was also a Surveyor of HM Customs and his wife, plus one servant. It is not clear if the visitors were long or short term. The next property at No 14 was also a Lodging House run by a widow woman who had one boarder, plus 5 lodgers and three servants, one of whom was described as a nurse. Note the distinction of description between lodgers and boarders
